['ɛɪɛf'ɛl siːaɪ'oʊ], Abkürzung für American Federation of Labor/Congress of Industrial Organizations [ə'merɪkən fɛdə'reɪʃn əv 'lɛɪbə 'kɑȖgres əv ɪn'dʌstrɪəl ɔgənaɪ'zɛɪʃnz], größte Dachorganisation von Gewerkschaften der USAFL/CIO Die AFL/CIO entstand im Dezember 1955 als Wiedervereinigung der bereits 1886 gegründeten AFL mit dem 1935/38 entstandenen CIO, dessen Mitgliedsverbände sich Mitte der 1930er-Jahre vom AFL getrennt hatten, u. a. weil sie das Industrieverbandsprinzip befürworteten und die Organisierung angelernter und farbiger Arbeiter anstrebten.
